I forgot to mention last week that I got Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne volume 1 while I was at Purdue (my parents are much looser with their money when they travel, even if it's a 2.5-hour drive to someplace we go all the time).

I'm actually quite happy with how CMX (the licensor/distributor) has handled it so far. The characters don't call each other by their first names (unless they originally did), they keep honorifics intact, and for the most part, the translation is pretty good (even though they do "kid it up" immensely... Also, one of my favorite scenes in the original, where Chiaki asks Maron out and she says "yes" before she realizes what she's agreed to, was changed so that Maron's "yes" was a sigh instead... Petty, I know, but what was the point of editing that? :/).

You can sort of tell they're directing it at a cutesy, kiddy audience, which wouldn't really bother me if I didn't already know what's to come in the series.

Y'see, the age label on the back of the graphic novel says it's an Everyone series, which it is... until about tankouban 4 or 5. And then it gets convoluted with <spoilers [Claire, I'm considering forcing this down your throat, so maybe don't read this...?]> death, attempted rape, some heavy betrayal, and a really twisted, potentially offensive view on Christianity. Oh, and Maron and Chiaki have sex (though nothing is shown, but especially within the context of the dialogue and the story, you know they do) in tankouban 7. </spoilers> Will the series survive major edits if they continue to advertise it as an E series? Maybe, probably not. Considering the fact that it's CMX, almost definitely not. Will they pull a TokyoPop and change the rating as the series progresses (as TP did with Kare Kano and perhaps other series)? Probably not. :/

But I'm staying optimistic. Hopefully, if they do decide to edit some stuff, they'll be sensible. I'm really hoping they just keep everything unedited (and stop it with the stupid "I swear this is for kids" translation and dialogue, 'cause there's [eventually] some heavy stuff in there that your average American ten-year-old girl won't likely understand; that's true of all of Tanemura's series, which start off seeming cuter and more innocent than they really are).

Hoping for the best (KKJ is one of my favorite manga series, after all)... Ah, if only it hadn't been CMX... I'd even pick TP over them at this point, 'cause they've gotten a lot better recently (honorifics, relatively faithful translations, etc.).

Oh, and they changed Maron's "Game start!" to "Let the game begin!" I mean, how dumb is that? I'll take bizarre Engrish over a stupid clichéd phrase any day.

At any rate, as you may know, CMX is infamous for the (w)hack job they did (are doing) on Tenjou Tenge, which, my friends, is not a 13+ series. It's not a 15+, 16+, or 17+ series, either. I have no idea what crazy lunatic thought it'd be cool to market what's basically pornography to a teenaged audience (and yes, it's that bad... overt sex, rape, lots of nudity; pretty good story for a fighting series, though (ah, how desensitized I've become ._.)), but that's what they're doing. What they end up doing by marketing it as 13+, though, is cutting out... everything (understandably, people are angry). CMX's reputation has definitely suffered a major blow because of what they've done to TenTen. And dude, it's totally their fault anyway. :(

But yeah, hopefully they treat other series with the respect they deserve. I haven't touched a CMX series yet, so I wouldn't know, but if they continue with the relatively good job they've been doing with KKJ (and if they don't edit stuff coming in the later graphic novels), they'll have regained some of my respect.

Oh, crap. I do have a Tenipuri-related update. Sort of. Just... *pnish* panic days is supposed to arrive today, but I doubt it will. :/ But feel free to stalk my package with me!

Oh, and one more thing. I'd just like to remind you all that Fuuma (the fellow in my icon)'s seiyuu is Suwabe Junichi. Old news, I know, and I watched X TV years before Ayu-chan clued me in on just how hawt Suwabe's voice is, but I just wanted to mention it. Yargh... :D

Okay, last thing, I promise... I'm totally going to learn the guitar part to Hotel California. I love that song. And if you're going to say something stupid like, "But Inez, darling, you have no idea how to play the guitar!" and claim that honesty is the best policy, then you're not my friend anymore. ._.
