ltgmars: ([tenipuri] torishishi ~ sunny days)
[personal profile] ltgmars
Inspired by a recent post on the anime blog Simplicity, I spent hours and hours today looking up some of my favorite anime opening themes and writing comments. I found it difficult to do a top ten, so I decided to categorize them instead.

Also, this is a good way to show off my extensive vocabulary. Frequent winners are "nice", "neat", "great", and "appropriate".

The Predictables: These are the classic OPs that don't take a lot of work to be memorable. They're also the ones that are cited again and again as some of the best openings in anime, and with good reason. Maybe they're overrated, but hey, I like 'em, and it's my list, so STFU.

Cowboy Bebop OP - Tank! [YT]
First of all, let's talk about the song. It's so great. *_* The almost big-band feel and the mumbled jazzy phrases make it instantly recognizable. Other lyricless opening themes should be ashamed. In addition, it's catchy and not necessarily linked to Japan, which is appropriate for Cowboy Bebop, since it's so nationless and universal. The song itself is enough to make it a great opening sequence. Throw in the classy ship/character rundown and the artsy-fartsy, "too cool for you and for this opening theme" silhouette animation, all synched perfectly to the music, and you have a winner.

Neon Genesis Evangelion OP - Zankoku na Tenshi no TEZE [YT]
What hasn't been said about this opening? The song never gets old, and the animation is both erratic and mesmerizing -- two things that'll stick in your head. What was so fun about watching this opening as I watched the series was that I recognized more and more of what was being shown, but the shots were so brief and bunched together that there wasn't time to get spoiled. The opening animation tells a lot of the story, and you only realize it as the story itself unfolds. I especially like the sequence of the frames near the end, around 1:20-1:25, right before we have a pan of EVA-01. There are beats and lots of frames, and suddenly there's a completely black set of frames. In the credited version, Anno's name as director is the only thing on the screen. It's almost like his way of saying, "Hey, y'all, I'm an attention whore, but I'm presenting it in a way that's cool, so you can't get mad at me. Neener neener."

Shoujo Kakumei Utena OP - Rinbu Revolution [YT]
I love this opening sequence. The first part shows us the basic plot devices: shoujo, lesbians, pretty animation, flowers. (Something that I've always appreciated about Utena: the animation is gorgeous, and the character designs are very elegant. Something that I've always hated about Utena: so many flowers, WTFFFF.) Once you get to the refrain, you get to see the driving force of the series: shiny swords, the entire world crumbling, and an upside-down castle as the background of the two lesbians, who are together and then separated. Awesome.

Old Favorites: These are a few themes from some older-ish (not really) series that I've always enjoyed. They aren't as ubiquitously known or appreciated as the predictables, but they're by no means lightweights.

Slayers NEXT OP - Give a Reason [YT]
Along with being one of the catchiest songs in anime history, the opening sequence is packed with the things that make Slayers what it is: the memorable characters, some flashy action, and a bit of goofy humor. The section around 8-10 seconds is great -- the music really kicks in, and the title blazes onto the screen, and you're like, "Hell yes, Slayers. NEXT. Shiiing." And then it dissolves, getting ready to introduce you to what it's all about. And there it is: Slayers. NEXT. Shiiing.

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu OP - Sore ga Ai Deshou [YT]
Shimokawa Mikuni is probably my favorite female J-pop singer, and with good reason. She has such a sweet, calming voice, but it's still powerful and emotional when you need it to be. FMP! has been fortunate enough to have her sing all of the opening and ending themes, so it was a matter of picking my favorite animation sequence. Since this one is the least action-oriented, it's the most flowing and beautiful and romantic, which is great. Now, whether that reflects the series itself is another matter, but hey, it's a nice opening. I've always, always, always loved the part with Kaname in the leaves around 57-58 seconds, synched to the phrase "konna ni". And, well, it's just a pretty, romantic song in general. Thumbs up.

Noir OP - Copperia no Hitsugi [YT]
The psychadelic colors definitely did it for me. Barely anything is the proper color here, and the color differences make it visually sensational. Like with the Bebop OP, there's some nice silhouette action here as well, though this seems to tell a story a little more coherently than the Bebop OP, which is just a bunch of cool-looking shots synched to the music. I appreciate both techniques, but putting the Noir animation sequence together with the strained, almost haunting melody of the song gives it a nice air of mystery and intrigue appropriate for the series.

Ouran Koukou Host Club OP - Sakura Kiss [YT]
Okay, so Ouran isn't that old. I'm putting it in this category because I have a feeling that the opening is going to be one of things that I think of years from now when I think of fun opening sequences. The song is way too catchy, and the character showcase is so flowy and cutesy that I can't help but smile. It's a little lighter than the usual fare when it comes to opening themes that I enjoy (this is pure sugar pop whereas most of the others feel a little meatier), but that doesn't take away from my enjoyment of it. Also, everything's so pink and pearly and shoujo, so the song is appropriate.

Sailor Moon SuperS OP - Moonlight Densetsu [YT]
I like this version better than the original version. The animation is so shiny and rainbowwy! The checkerboard sequence with the Inners and cats is fantastic, and then we get to see the villains, mwahaha. Amazoness Quartet, yay. *_* (How sad is it that the Sailor Quartet never gets the light of day in the anime?) My favorite anime outfits are the SuperS outfits, so there's a plus. And of course, the song is a classic. (Something I'll miss: the shot in the first opening sequence where Usagi and Sailor Moon are running in opposite directions, with Tuxedo Kamen fading into the background. It can probably be better-executed with today's animation standards, but the idea is nice.) </dork>

You're Under Arrest! OP1 - Boku de Aru Tame ni [YT]
First of all, what a nice song. I love the way they say "zigzag". Meanwhile, the animation sequence is a nice showcase of the main characters, set in the context of their everyday lives. It's nice because it's exactly what the series is. I love the shot of Yoriko with the kids crossing the street. To be fair, there was a drastic drop in animation quality from the four-episode OVA to the TV series, which is evident in the opening sequence here, but it doesn't really take away from the nice atmosphere. In summation, pretty much everything about this opening sequence is nice.

Pocket Monsters Raikou Legend of Thunder OP - Aratanaru Chikai (Acoustic) [YT]
All you need to know about Pokémon: love, friendship, growth, determination, cutesy creatures with neato powers. It's all here. Moreso than any other Pokémon opening theme, this one has to tell a story, since that story isn't told in the special itself: Kenta gets a Pokémon, learns about it with his two friends, and goes on adventures, where he trains and evolves on his way to being a Pokémon master. Basically it sets up a nice tale of your average nice-guy Pokémon trainer, with a rival and epic grandiose super-figures and villains and everything. It's set to the acoustic version of the theme song (which I think is nicer than the actual version), and it lets you feel nostalgic even before you get into the show. It's not hyper-kinetic like a lot of Pokémon themes are, but it works nonetheless.

Pocket Monsters OP2 - Rival! [YT]
Pokémon has as knack for making appropriate opening themes. This opening theme, sung by Matsumoto Rica from Satoshi's perspective, is just as energetic and lesson-learned and nostalgic as Pokémon is. I've not a lot else to say... I just really like it.

Mahoromatic OP - Kaerimichi [YT]
The best part of this opening theme is easily the juxtaposition of adorable Mahoro antics with fluid, dynamic action, all to the tune of the world's cutest song. And... that's basically all there is to it. Simple, but it brings a smile to your face.

Energy/Action: These opening sequences are properly dramatic and action-packed for their respective series. Kudos.

Full Metal Alchemist OP4 - Rewrite [YT]
I like everything about this opening sequence. The initial slow, quiet pans; the rising action into an incredible sequence of mile-a-minute alchemy; the zooming shots, Envy's grin... everything. Everything. Great opening, A++! Would watch again.

Gundam SEED Destiny OP3 - Bokutachi no Yukue [YT]
For a series with a production cost of ¥33,000,000 per episode, you'd think they could come up with new animation for each opening sequence, but I guess their philosophy is, "If it works, use it again. And again. And again." Classic SEED/Destiny fare, and, well, it works. I've gotta say, though, I miss the unnecessary-bouncing-breasts silhouette from the first SEED opening sequence (another favorite).

Get Backers OP - Yuragu Koto Nai Ai [YT]
This one took some getting used to (especially the first part, where it's just Tamura's voice against the drums... it's not that interesting), but once the songs sets in and the yaoi fangirls start foaming at the mouth at the quiet Ginji/Ban shots, it turns into a kind of "ah, that's kind of nice" song. And then once we get back to the refrain, showing off the cast and some running silhouettes, leading up to the zoom-in shots of Ginji and Ban and beyond, we're bopping our heads a little and getting into the mood. It's an interesting progression, and it definitely gets you ready to watch the series.

BLEACH OP2 - D-technoLife [YT]
I can kind of see the singer scrunching his eyes closed, grimacing into a microphone that he's pretty much swallowing, singing with a vengeance. And that's kind of how I see the characters in BLEACH sometimes -- doing what they do, with a little pain and emotion, because it means something to them. The floating action shots are particularly nice in combination with the refrain of the song, and it all flows very nicely. Also, Ichigo is extremely, ridiculously blazing hot.

Lipsynch: All of the really annoyingly repetitive opening themes have a nice lipsynch thing going for them. Not really sure how repetitivity and lipsynching are related, but it's fun to watch.

Chobits OP - Let Me Be With You [YT]
So this is one of those a-little-too-catchy theme songs, but it's cute and romantic and stuff. The pixelization and electric blinking colors are pretty nice, too, and they work well in showing a little bit of the electronic aspect of the series. Bonus points for giving away no hints of the pounds and pounds of unnecessary ecchi to come.

Mahou Tsukai Tai TV OP - I Wanna Do More [YT]
Haha, even the wands sing. It's funny.

Parody: Self-explanatory.

Genshiken 2 OP - disarm dreamer [YT]
This is seriously brilliant. Five seconds into the first time I watched it, I thought to myself, "Huh, it's kind of like a Gundam opening theme." And there you have it: Gungal. For those of you not acquainted with Genshiken, there are basically four main fandoms that they focus on: Kujibiki Unbalance, Gungal, fighting games, and H-games. Of course, there are references around the clock to other franchises and genres, but seeing as it's one of their bigger reference-mongers, it's only appropriate that the opening theme is a perfect replica of a Gundam (Gungal) opening theme.

Awesome OPs of Crappy Series: Also self-explanatory. Please note that the Ikkitousen and Tenjou Tenge OPs aren't really SFW.

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne OP2 - Dive Into Shine [YT]
Great manga (one of my absolute favorites). Crappy anime adaptation. The passing transformation in the opening sequence into Sinbad and Jeanne is pretty cool, though. The rest of it plays like you'd expect a kids' mahou shoujo series opening theme to play (seriously, the manga is so much more mature than this tripe), but I really like the song.

Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai OP - metamorphose [YT]
Gainax knows how to animate opening sequences, that's for sure. The series itself is a little questionable when it comes to quality/story/making any sense at all, but the opening sequence is pretty well-done. The song itself builds up really nicely, and the strings, regardless of synthesis, give it a nice touch of urgency. I may be biased, though. (Unrelatedly, does this remind anyone of Mahoromatic? It's basically the same thing (character designs, seiyuu, etc.) with about a sixteenth of the charm.)

Ikkitousen OP - Drivin' Through the Night [YT]
Tenjou Tenge OP - Bomb A Head [YT]
[NSFW] I can't really find anything to say about these two. They're pretty much the same kind of creature -- possibly decent fighting anime buried under big boobs and panty shots. As much as I disliked the series themselves (never really got around to finishing Tenjou Tenge, actually), their opening sequences are pretty neat. I guess. I like Drivin' Through the Night as a song better, but the presentation for Bomb A Head, with the broken frames and the breakdancing, is fun to watch.

So... what are your favorite anime opening themes?

Yes, there was a second season. Aired last fall, I believe.

BTW, it took me a long time to like Akane, and I kept wondering why you liked her so much. She was kind of stuck-up and annoying when she first showed up in the OVA, but I got to like her over time. Congratulations. :3

downloading the first episode now. I'm SO excited, this will totally reinspire me to watch anime.

I'm not really sure why I picked Akane as my favorite character, because she's really not that likable in the OVA. Yet, I loved her from the first moment she was on screen. Even though I had a few problems with the TV Series I'm really glad it exists, especially because it adds another dimension to her character.

I forgot to mention this was a great list, I enjoyed reading it :).

I love that you mentioned Eva. I heard someone killing the theme song in the karaoke room at Otakon this weekend. I need to find a copy of the song to put on my iPod.

I loved the first OP for D.Gray-man. [YT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khhI2EdEbJE)]. That song never gets old for me. Same with the theme song for Le Chevalier d'Eon [YT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLbNaHziaRE)].

Eva OP, anyone? (http://media.bubblewrapglory.org/misc/Evangelion_-_Cruel_Angels_Thesis.mp3) :D It seems that the song gets butchered at just about every anime convention, so I guess that's some indication of how much people like it.

I've yet to see D.Gray-man or Le Chevalier d'Eon, though they've been on my list for ages. Are they any good?

*listens to the Eva OP over and over again*

I love both D.Gray-man and Le Chevalier d'Eon. Chevalier is one anime I'd love to watch again as soon as I can get the DVDs. It has a cool surprise ending that I'd like to see how they set up. It doesn't hurt that d'Eon is also a handsome looking guy. *points at icon*

D.Gray-man is probably the series I'm enjoying most right now. I love the story, characters and art. It had some fillers in the middle, but I even liked those. Plus it has Kanda, voiced by my current favorite seiyuu (Sakurai Takahiro).

Have you noticed this trend before?: So many "kids' shows" (or at least the ones kiddy enough to have the song lyrics captioned) have great opening and ending themes. Maybe it's because those shows can have the really energetic, catchy music without feeling out of place.

LOL @ "Awesome OPs of Crappy Series." The KKJ anime was a highly disappointing adaptation. But yes, Dive into Shine was quite the catchy tune. Besides classics (which you've mentioned), I don't have favorites. However, I remember Kodocha OP1 was fun [YT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV3L71acWw8&feature=related)]. I think ParaKiss had a cool theme [YT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YR4pehBKko)] and I will always remember The Vision of Escaflowne OP [YT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_3WOCGKTfM)]. I've also been interested in foreign songs used for opening sequences. For instance, this song for the German Sailormoon OP [YT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AC4pgBPLOk0)]. Techno-rific? Ha ha. A lot of replacement songs are icky *cough*cardcaptorstheme*cough*, but I do enjoy seeing how other countries change the OP and ED sequences.

Cardcaptors! A mystic adventure! Cardcaptors! A quest for all time!

The worst part of that dub was that they made everyone and his dog mispronounce "Clow". Also, freaking stupidest dub names ever. :/
