4th of July!
Jul. 5th, 2004 00:04Since it's officially the fifth of July, I might as well talk about last night. ^^
We were invited to my brother's friend's (Weston) house for a nice little Fourth of July get-together, and seeing as my brother can never pass up the opportunity to hang out with his friends and smack them down in Smash Bros., we accepted the offer.
It was sort of nice to watch them all goof off while playing basketball, making jokes about each other and just being themselves. They've been doing it for years, and I wouldn't be surprised if they, in the far future, ended up meeting every once in a while to catch up on old times. Sorry to get all sappy on you, but I really do think these are the best types of friends a person can have. They always back each other up, and even though they spend so much time in front of the TV or doing some other type of competitive activity (egging each other on to boot), each of them is raised with such high moral standards and with such loving families backing them up that you can't deny that they truly are a good influence on each other.
I felt a bit out of place, but I knew them all well enough to strike up conversations when they weren't off in their own little groups (my brother and his two other senior friends, my brother's friends' kid brothers (both sophomores), the three moms, the three dads... and me). After the five guys played basketball for a while, we had hamburgers and hot dogs, and then we were ready to set off our little sets of fireworks. I was perfectly content with watching them be pyromaniacs, sitting while they made things go Boom!, and being eaten alive by the mosquitos (until someone passed around the bug spray), but through it all, I never really felt lonely, since more than anything, it's just nice to see everyone have a great time with loved ones. It was especially nice when Weston's mom reminded Weston to give me some stuff to blow up, and he replied, "I'm one step ahead of you," on his way to handing me the best set of fireworks for the evening's finale.
After fireworks, we headed inside and ate dessert (I had ice cream, though there were also brownies and cookies), and we all headed either for the living room (that's where the three moms went) or the TV room (that's where everyone else went). The hosts have a really nice electronic keyboard (a $4000 Clavinova) that they bought for the aspiring musician in the family (Weston's little brother, Nick). Diki, Weston, and the third senior (Danny) huddled around the TV and played Smash Bros. while Nick showed us some classy jazz stylings (he's amazingly talented, especially for someone his age). He was trying to teach me sevenths chords (I think major is 1356, minor is 1357 or (inverted) 7235... those are probably wrong), and they helped me sight-read Fly Me to the Moon (yeah, sorry, it's also associated with an anime series, so I couldn't pass it up). Before I knew it, it was already 11:15 and we had to go.
It would have been nice to spend the night with some people that were more my friends than theirs (e.g. Adam), but we're all close families, and it was really nice that everyone made me feel welcome and a part of the whole.
The best part is that they consider me as such.
