So I accompanied Will to GameStop today and ended up coming home with this pretty little number. I'm mostly going to be using him as a Japanese dictionary (because if I go with my current plan, I'll be writing my East Asian Studies thesis based on a book in Japanese, and I'll need a better method for looking up mysterious characters than searching by radical on Jim Breen). I've ordered the dictionary game, which will hopefully make it here sometime next week at the latest (because if not, it'll be sitting in my Haverford mailbox for three weeks), but in the meantime, I picked up Pokémon Pearl to play. *vui* (Will got Diamond.)

I never finished Silver, and I didn't even bother with anything from the third generation (though I've been babysitting my friend's Gameboy Advance since high school, and I'm pretty sure he said to me one day, "You can keep it."), but the graphics in Pearl are slick, man.

The game was used = cheaper!, and we looked at the last guy's game. He had data for all 493 Pokémon and had logged over 300 hours on his game. It's like the beefed up version of my Yellow game -- 151 Pokémon, 189 hours, a hell of a lot of teamwork and trading with my brother, and a lucky friend who got Mew at a Nintendo event of some kind -- except that it's apparently impossible to have all 493 unless you do a lot of maneuvering/cheats. Realistically for me, I'm not going to have time to seriously play the game like I did Yellow, so I'm just going to casually sift through it when I can.

... How long has it been since I've geeked out about Pokémon? Oh, childhood, how I've missed you.

The guy told me that they were out of the silver (which was the display case that I originally picked out), but I kind of like this color scheme better. :3

Even though I live in the land of Pokeproduct, I've never played a Pokegame. Are they...really fun? Like, honestly entertaining?

I think what it comes down to is that there's always a way to get better, there are always people to beat, and there's always more to collect. The game itself is fairly engaging -- it's an easy RPG, but there's enough mystery and problem-solving to keep people entertained without being too frustrated; and I think a lot of people are pulled into the world and their ability to explore it as it all unfolds.

I can definitely see where adults might find fun in more complex games, but I think there's a fair number of people attached to these games anyway.

Plus quite a few rare pokemon that... I didn't cheat to get. >D :3 We should trade and that.
(And actually, with the way they do some of the events, plus being able to trade with Japanese people over Wi-fi... And Silver/Gold being re-released... I think we should be able to 'get them all' someday!

Yeah, the last handheld Nintendo system I really used was my Gameboy Color, and really playing with a DS... geez, you can do so much nowadays, huh? I used to have to bring a cable along if I wanted to trade Pokémon with someone. XD

I have the red/black one too. But I don't have Pokemon. I really only like playing Pokemon when I can cheat. That's true of me and most games though. I enjoy the storyline and the gameplay, but I don't like getting bogged down in defeat and dying. *snort*

The only games I have are Mario Kart and Mario World. But I mostly suck at them because again ... I can't cheat. I have yet to find a good DS emulator though. Once I do, the Pokemon world will continue for me. ;)

I know, I know. I'm horrible. I'm also broke, which doesn't help with buying of new games. I checked back into the emu's today but there's still not one out there stable enough for the good games.

I did manage to beat Crystal and Emerald with my GBA one though. (Cheats really do rule. >.>)
