ltgmars: ([random] turning japanese)
[personal profile] ltgmars
Exactly one month from today (why so late??), I will be starting classes at UCLA for a Master's in East Asian Studies. In order to get ready, I've been doing a lot of sitting on my ass, not reviewing Japanese, not writing the things I need to write, etc. etc. etc. In short, it's been a splendidly productive summer.

But! I need your help to make it even more splendidly productive! I'm putting together a playlist to get me in the mood, and I need songs [about California/making references to California (or California people)/with "California" in the title]. So let me hear your suggestions!

If you suggest Katy Perry, I will find a way to shoot you through the internet. :).

Aside from the obvious Hotel California, a song that I really love is Tori Amos's A Sorta Fairytale. The 101 is a highway that runs through California, and the whole setting of the song is the west coast leg of her road trip across the USA. Pretty song. ♥

Thanks, dear!

2Pac - California Love (♥)
Plain White T's - Meet Me in California
Mat Kearney - New York to California
Jo Dee Messina - Heads Carolina, Tails California

And that's all I have on my iTunes with "California" in the title. XD

YOU WILL HAVE SO MUCH FUN OMG. That is crazy late to start, though. O.o

I tried that with my iTunes! As it turns out, Japanese boy bands do not sing about California.

Yeaahhh, I guess the quarter system messes with the start/end times, but it should be fun.

AND OMG JACKIE today is your first day! DO IT DO IIIIT

"California Dreamin'"-The Mamas and the Papas. Of all the songs about California, this is the one I catch myself singing the most...perhaps because I find myself stuck in South Bend during the winter.

"Californication"-Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I still remember the (awesome) music video for this song...that makes me feel old, ancient really.

Yeah, winter in South Bend will do that to a person.

Ah, I know how you feel about the "Californication" music video, though. That was so long ago~

Thanks for the suggestions! Also, excellent icon. :D

Hotel California is a must. And you must know the lyrics and be able to sing it at a moment's notice. *nod*

...Okay, I jest. I just personally happen to love the Eagles and Hotel California is one of my favorite songs all-time, but you should know it anyway. .^_~

I also recommend California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papas, and Lights by Journey.

So there's this one song that for the life of me I couldn't remember when I thought California. I couldn't even remember the tune! I remember the intro is a guitar solo and I remember where I was the first time I liked the song but yea that didn't help. I remember thinking "huh a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers' songs are about California" when I listened to it so I looked through their discography to see whether I would recognize the title but noo. Googling RHCP + California didn't help either cuz only Dani California & Californication would show up. I even started googling for bands that sound like RHCP. Then I googled songs about California and heeyy wiki has a list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_about_California)! That narrowed that the RHCP songs I need to check and I finally found it! Under the Bridge. And it's apparently about LA, not California. That wasted about 45 minutes of my life but otherwise it would drive me crazy until I figure it out. Pheh.

END RANT.

edit: ...sorry that turned into a rant orz I was annoyed at myself for not remembering the song haha xp

That Katy Perry song is one of the most irritating songs ever... and I've listened to Ke$ha's CD. :|

Just searched my media player for songs. Besides several of the above mentioned, these popped up:

California by Mason Jennings
California by Phantom Planet
California Bound by Carolina Liar
California Girls by The Beach Boys
California Sun by The Ramones
Going Back to Cali by The Notorious B.I.G.
Shores of California by The Dresden Dolls

Hahaha, Ke$ha isn't actually that irritating. Her voice grates, but her music is stupid enough to be ironically fun to listen to. Katy Perry, though. Ugh.

Thanks for all the California!

"Hollywood, Babylon" by The Misfits.
"California" by The Pretenders.
"California, Uber Alles!" The Dead Kennedys.
"Hollywood" by The Cranberries (this comes off quite a spiffy album if you like the band)
"Million Miles" by The Red Elvises. This band, though from Russia, tends to perform (with everyone dressed as Elvis) in and around California...and...they are worth seeing just for the energy they have.

Wave - California (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBHQk6hyIYI)

My one friend/co-worker and I adore this song, so it must be said. We seriously will listen to it on repeat and torture other workers.

Ah, make that a few more...
